Do It Right: Our top social media tips for 2020

Banish the algorithm fear, ignore the numbers and prioritise great content. Here’s how to do it!

It’s no secret that the social media landscape is moving at the most uncontrollable rate. More than ever before, the need for brands and businesses to have a strong digital presence can be considered as a must have marketing activity. Brands and businesses need to show up and show off what it is they truly do in a way that adds value to their audience in order to build loyalty, trust and grow their brand awareness.

Social media audiences require authentic connection in a way that is new for the consumer world. With social platforms becoming critical in driving purchase power, having a solid understanding of how to use social media for your business is no longer an option, but a necessity.

Ahead of our intensive social media workshop, Do It Right, we’ve pulled together our five top social media tips to give you a little taster of some of the things we’ll be diving into deeper on the day.

Know your audience

It might sound obvious that you need to know your audience, yet it remains one of the most commonly forgotten steps with social media strategy. It can be tempting to go for a one-size-fits-all approach, but a digitally savvy social brand will tailor their content to speak to their strongest audience profiles. Knowing this information also helps dictate who else to follow, like-minded brands to partner with and how to grab the attention of your most valuable customers.

Stay focused

Avoid being on every social media channel. Not every channel is going to be right for your audience. It’s a common misconception that social is a “simple” job. Spoiler alert: it’s not! A lot of time and effort is required to truly reap the rewards. Choosing the best platforms for your content is key and will vary depending on who your target customer is. Where does your audience spend their digital time? Where are they most likely going to discover your brand and engage with your content?

Add value

It’s a busy and competitive landscape out there in the online world so be clear on what value YOU can add with your content. There’s space for everyone - that’s one of the perks of social media - but remember that you need to give your audience a reason to support you and champion your brand. Don’t talk about yourself, talk about the things that matter to them that your brand can offer!

Look at the big picture

Social media is just a PART of your marketing strategy and should work in addition to the wider strategy, not alone. Don’t treat it as a separate entity or there will be a disconnect between your digital channels. Content is crucial for all areas of your marketing and can serve multiple purposes so invest in it wisely and you’ll get great usage out of it. One method is to focus on your website content - and the social content will flow seamlessly.

Leave your ego at the door

Don’t ignore the word social! Social media is as much about listening as it is about posting. What are your audience talking about each day? What are their mindsets? Social media can seem full of big personalities, which can be daunting if you’re not one of them. Be open to new relationships, connecting offline with the people you engage with and open to criticism and advice from those you engage with. It’s not about you, it’s about all of “them”!
